Where do I stand?
A primary candidate doesn’t gain political advantage by being specific about the issues. But voters deserve better.
Education
I am proud to have been endorsed by Stand for Children in recognition of my work on children’s issues.
- Action. I will work aggressively with the Democratic caucus, Senate, and the governor to make sure we set the bar high for education. Democrats must work together and across the aisle on this most critical issue. I support a constitutional floor for stable, adequate state education funding.
- Accountability. The public deserves to know how education dollars are being spent. Money must go where it matters most: the classroom.
- Fairness. Portland schools suffer under a state funding formula that fails to recognize the higher cost of education in urban areas. We need to revise the formula. More of the Portland dollars sent to Salem should come back to fund Portland schools.
- Early investment. Economists estimate that for every $1 we invest in early childhood education, we save $7 or more downstream. Oregon should expand its pre-k system, making this proven opportunity available to more children throughout the state.
- Reform. Strong schools support great teaching and learning. Oregon should expand opportunities for professional development, peer mentorship, and teacher collaboration in all schools.
